“Where are you, Gran? Mummy says we’re going on a picnic by the river. Are you coming?” Becky’s voice echoed through the still, silent house.

Up in the attic, Audrey pushed a strand of grey hair behind her ear and closed her eyes, pretending she didn’t hear her great-granddaughter’s strident voice. An old car rug lay across her knees as she gently moved back and forth in the wooden rocking chair. Lost in wartime memories, she really didn’t want to be disturbed.

She’d been trying to clear some clutter from the attic when she’d come across this old blue-checked rug. Still folded in its protective tissue paper, it sang its memories up to her, and with a little sigh she’d lifted it and sunk down into the chair. Her hand lovingly twisted the ring that had circled her wedding finger for the past sixty years. A single emerald in a simple gold setting. High summer sunshine filtered through the dusty dormer windows, the gentle heat carrying her back through time.

On that day so long ago, the blue-checked rug had been spread on the grass beneath the canopy of an oak tree. Audrey lay on it, her head cushioned in Hugh’s lap, her eyes closed against the sun’s dancing rays. As his fingers gently stroked her cheek, she listened to the sound of children playing and shouting to each other in the park on the other side of the river. Here on this side, screened from the world by the long grass and trees, she and Hugh were alone in their own private world…
